ASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUBS

A RESOLUTION

NO. 2020 – 21

REMEMBERING THE LIFE OF WILMER “SONNY” YANGSON

WHEREAS, hānau ʻo Sonny ma ka lā 23 o Malaki ma ka makahiki 1941 ma Nāpoʻopoʻo, Kona; and

WHEREAS, Sonny was 76 when he passed with children and family nearby; and

WHEREAS, he was preceded in death by his wife in 1973, and he raised their children as a single father; and

WHEREAS, he leaves behind a daughter Pamela (Vince) Marquez, sons Bully Cannon, Kahau (Karen) Yangson, and Toots (Raynette) Yangson, brother Albert (Debbie) Yangson, and sisters Pua (Payton) Akamu, and Kahala (Stephen) Acob, and brother-in-law George Pang, 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Sonny worked where he was born, went to school and worked the plantation life, and when that ended he became a laborer for a biogenics seed corn operation, a rigger for Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co., and a labor forman for Goodfellow Brothers and Blasting Technology; and

WHEREAS, Sonny was an ocean person spending time diving, throwing net, and fishing and could often be found at Kapanaia, Kohala, watching the waves; and

WHEREAS, Sonny also enjoyed going up-stream for food in the Makalapa-Hālawa area and gather and bring back opae, prawns, and vee to cook at home, which was always delicious; and

WHEREAS, Sonny loved animals and always had dogs, and passed that on to his children; and

WHEREAS, Sonny loved and played sports, and his kids and grandkids all love and play sports as well.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs at its 61st Annual Convention held online, in the malama of Makali‘i and the rising of ʻOlekūkolu, this 22nd day of November 2020, remembering the life of Wilmer “Sonny” Yangson; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a certified copy of this resolution be transmitted to Velda N Akamu, Pelekikena of Kohala Hawaiian Civic Club, as well as the Governor of the State of Hawai‘i, President of the State Senate, Speaker of the State House of Representatives, Chair of the State Senate subject matter committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the State House subject matter committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and all other County Mayors.

The undersigned herby certifies that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted in the malama of Makaliʻi and the rising of ʻOlekūkolu on the 22nd day of November 2020, at the 61st Annual Convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs held online.
