ASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUBS

A RESOLUTION

No. 2019 -25

CONGRATULATING THE KALIHI PALAMA HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB ON ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY

WHEREAS, On November 19, 1969, the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club became the 17th club of the O‘ahu Council to be chartered by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs; and

WHEREAS, the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club, under the leadership of the late Hardy Hutchinson, Eleanor Hutchinson, and Nappy Durant sponsored the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club’s induction into the Association; and

WHEREAS, the founding members of the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club were: Susan K. Pine; Eleanor “Aunty Ellie” Williamson, historian with the Bishop Museum; Aunty Marie Olson, chaplain; Aunty Anna Eagles Wahineho‘okai, choral/music director; Pearl Kam, Treasurer; Paul Dabis, Finance; Joan McCubbin Fabrao; Kupuna Maile Montevon; Kupuna Helen Gandel; and former Hawai‘i Governor, John Waihe‘e III; and

WHEREAS, the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club has had four presidents: Aunty Sue Pine; Dexter Soares; Leimomi Khan; and currently, Kaimo Muhlestein; and

WHEREAS, its original club song was “Hoikaika Like Me Ke Aloha” written by the late uncle Henry Machado and the late Aunty Helena Wilcox Salazar, and it is also the club motto; and

WHEREAS, on January 14, 2019, club members adopted two additional club songs; “Kaulana Ku‘u ‘Āina O Kalihi” composed by Kumu Hinaleimoana Wong, and “‘Ekolu Mea Nui;” and

WHEREAS, the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club mission has been to advocate for and defend native Hawaiian rights (water rights, land rights, gathering rights); culture (perpetuating and preserving language, history, music, dance, and other cultural traditions); health; economic development; education; housing and social welfare; self-governance; safeguarding the Ali‘i Trusts; and supporting the overall mission and long range goals and objectives of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs; and

WHEREAS, the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club has and continues to introduce resolutions at the annual Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs convention to advocate for the welfare and well-being of Native Hawaiians and to testify at the Hawai‘i State Legislature on bills impacting Native Hawaiians; and

WHEREAS, the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club has consistently donated food baskets and/or toys for families in need in Kalihi; and

WHEREAS, the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club has provided scholarships for children to attend the Kamehameha Schools exploration program; and

WHEREAS, the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club has and continues to promote cultural activities, including workshops on ‘ohe kapala, lei draping for the Kamehameha Statue, ti-leaf lei making, cleaning lo‘i patches, and conducting hula clinics free to the residents of the Kamehameha and Ka‘ahumanu Homes; and

WHEREAS, the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club has supported the O‘ahu Council by participating in the Prince Kūhiō celebratory activities, such as the parade and ho‘olaule‘a; and the Kamehameha Lei Draping and parade; and

WHEREAS, the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club has annually participated in the Kalihi Business Christmas parade; and

WHEREAS, from the humble beginnings of selling Portuguese sausage door-to-door to fundraise, it now fundraises on a larger scale with clothing and food sales; and

WHEREAS, the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club has mentored and provided opportunities for its entrepreneur members; and

WHEREAS, today, the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club has a strong membership of 100.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs at its 60th Annual Convention in Lahaina, Maui, in the malama of Welehu and the rising of Lāʻau Pau, this 16th day of November 2019, congratulating the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club on its 50th anniversary; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a certified copy of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the Kalihi Palama Hawaiian Civic Club and the President of the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club, as well as the Governor of the State of Hawai‘i, President of the State Senate, Speaker of the State Representatives, Chair of the State Senate subject matter committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the State House of Representatives subject matter committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Senators from Senate Districts 14 and 15, Representatives from House Districts 28, 29 and 30, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and all county mayors.

The undersigned hereby certifies that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted in the malama of Welehu and the rising of Lāʻau Pau on the 16th day of November 2019, at the 60th Annual Convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in Lahaina, Maui.
