A RESOLUTION
No. 2019 -20
HONORING THE MEMORY OF PAULIE KEAKEALANI (LEE) JENNINGS
WHEREAS, Paulie Keakealani (Lee) Jennings was born on April 11, 1930, in Hilo, Hawai‘i, to Peter R. Lee and Kahiwa Thompson Lee; and
WHEREAS, as young child in Hilo, Paulie enjoyed meeting people, exploring the beautiful island of Hawai‘i, and would often accompany her mother, who was a public health nurse, on visits to the many neighborhoods in and around Hilo and along the Hāmākua coast, and she very much cherished her visits to the family home up at the volcano area; and
WHEREAS, after World War II, she relocated to Honolulu with her mother where she was active in school and church organizations at the Cathedral of St. Andrew; and
WHEREAS, Paulie graduated from Roosevelt High School with the class of 1948, and later she attended the University of Hawai‘i, and in 1952 was awarded a Bachelor’s degree; and
WHEREAS, Paulie continued her education at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington and the Sorbonne University in Paris, France where she acquired the taste and talent for French cooking, and where she was an active member of Delta Delta Delta sorority; and
WHEREAS, Paulie married Patrick Henry Jennings on June 6, 1953, at the Cathedral of St. Andrew, in Honolulu, and after their marriage she and her husband relocated to New York to raise their family; and
WHEREAS, Paulie was an active volunteer, as well as the best mother anyone could have; and
WHEREAS, she chaired fundraising efforts for special needs children in the late 1950’s and was active with the St. Charles Hospital Auxiliary in the 1960’s and early 1970’s; and
WHEREAS, Paulie enjoyed traveling in her early years and made several trips to Europe and the Middle East in the 1950’s and 1960’s where she met many lifelong friends; and
WHEREAS, Paulie was a talented writer and wrote several pieces for the Heute Press of Vienna, Austria, and whose notes, letters, and stories are a gift for those she has left behind; and
WHEREAS, Paulie returned to Hawai‘i in 1977, and pursued a career in real estate, and during this time she reconnected with family and friends and after several successful years in the business community she chose to trade real estate for the Hawaiian culture; and
WHEREAS, Paulie joined the Moanalua Gardens Foundation as Executive Director in 1987; and
WHEREAS, she was also active member of the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Honolulu; and
WHEREAS, Paulie joined Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club in 2009, and was a member in good standing, and she enjoyed her monthly newsletters to keep her abreast on what the club was doing until recent months; and
WHEREAS, Paulie served on the Hawaiian Committee as well as many other activities at the Cathedral of St. Andrew, and Paulie cherished the love she had for all her friends there, and appreciated all of their love and support throughout the years; and
WHEREAS, Paulie served on the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army and was active throughout the Hawaiian Community; and
WHEREAS, Paulie created and produced the “World Invitational Hula Festival, E Ho‘i Mai i ka Piko Hula” for 21 years until her retirement in 2013, and she shared her passion freely for hula and all things Hawaiian; and
WHEREAS, Paulie enjoyed her final years among her peers and dear friends at Lunalilo Home surrounded by the caring and loving staff; and
WHEREAS, Paulie is survived by her siblings, brothers Clifford Lee, Paul Lee, Peter Lee, sister Marie Kaleiwahea; and her children, sons Grant Jennings, Dean Jennings, hānai daughter Leohone Magno, and hānai son John Starr Alexander; and
WHEREAS, Paulie passed away on June 17, 2019.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs at its 60th Annual Convention in Lahaina, Maui, in the malama of Welehu and the rising of Lāʻau Pau, this 16th day of November 2019, honoring the memory of Paulie Keakealani (Lee), Jennings; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a moment of silence be held in honor of the memory of Paulie Keakealani (Lee) Jennings; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that certified copies of this resolution to be transmitted to siblings Clifford Lee, Paul Lee, Peter Lee, Marie Kaleiwahea, sons Grant Jennings and Dean Jennings, hānai daughter Leohone Magno, hānai son John Starr Alexander, Moanalua Gardens Foundation, and Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club, as well as the Governor of the State of Hawai‘i, President of the State Senate, Speaker of the State House of Representatives, Chair of the State Senate subject matter committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the State House subject matter committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and all county mayors.
The undersigned hereby certifies that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted in the malama of Welehu and the rising of Lāʻau Pau on the 16th day of November 2019, at the 60th Annual Convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in Lahaina, Maui.
