A RESOLUTION

No. 2019 – 11

REMEMBERING AND HONORING LURLINE HINANO LEE FOR HER DEDICATION AND COMMITMENT TO HER BIRTHRIGHT AS KANAKA MAULI

WHEREAS, Lurline Hinano Lee was born to Mary Kapai Keli‘ikipi and Cardinal Kuhio Thomas, Sr., Hawaiian Nationals of our Nation, ko Hawai‘i pae‘āina, in the welaof January 28, 1933, and raised in Wahiawā; and

WHEREAS, Lurline Hinano Lee, who was married to Castle Vernon Lee, Sr. for more than four decades, was a treasured wife, mother of seven, and grandmother of eight, devoted to her chosen field of education, but especially to the responsibilities of her birthright as Kanaka Mauli; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Lee, served over 20 years with the State of Hawai‘i Department of Education (DOE) as an English teacher at Leilehua High School then followed her retirement from full-time teaching by continuing to educate for the next 10 years as a part of the DOE’s Kupuna Program, where she was affectionately known by many as “Kupuna Lee” at Mililani Waena Elementary; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Lee was a founding member of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Wahiawā on November 10, 1960, and for 49 years thereafter, held many offices – the most significant as pelekikena for 25 years from 1984 – 2009; and

WHEREAS, the members of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Wahiawā respect, honor, and acknowledge Mrs. Lee as Kupuna ‘O Pu‘uhonua Kūkaniloko, kalana Līhuʻe, Wahiawā, Halemano, Oʻahu a Laʻilaʻi.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs at its 60th Annual Convention in Lahaina, Maui, in the malama of Welehu and the rising of Lāʻau Pau, this 16th day of November 2019, remembering and honoring Lurline Hinano Lee for her dedication and commitment to her birthright as Kanaka Mauli; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a certified copy of this resolution be transmitted to her daughters, Mrs. Mamo Tabangcura and Mrs. Mahalo Pocock; her two granddaughters – Hawaiian Civic Club of Wahiawā nā lālā ʻōiwi Krystal-Lee Tabangcura and Kristina Waipuʻilani Tabangcura; and to the Hawaiian Civic Club of Wahiawā, as well as the Governor of the State of Hawai‘i, President of the State Senate, Speaker of the State House of Representatives, Chair of the State Senate subject matter committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the State House subject matter committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and all County Mayors.

The undersigned hereby certifies that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted in the malama of Welehu and the rising of Lāʻau Pau on the 16th day of November 2019, at the 60th Annual Convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in Lahaina, Maui.
