ASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUBS

A RESOLUTION

No. 2018 – 17

CONGRATULATING THE HALE O NĀ ALI‘I O HAWAI‘I, ‘AHAHUI PO‘O, HĀLAU ‘O WAHĪIKA‘AHU‘ULA, HELU ‘EKAHI ON ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF REESTABLISHMENT

WHEREAS, the founding chapter of Hale O Nā Ali‘i O Hawai‘i was reestablished on April 7, 1918; and

WHEREAS, the Hale O Nā Ali‘i O Hawai‘i was originally established by HM King David Kalākaua in 1886 as the Hale Nauā, and in 1891, at the death of King Kalākaua, the Hale Nauā closed; and

WHEREAS, on May 11, 1911, the Hale Nauā reopened as the ‘Ahahui Ka Hale O Nā Ali‘i; and

WHEREAS, the ‘Ahahui had a very difficult time setting its footing and by time of the death of Queen Lili‘uokalani in 1917, and the ‘Ahahui fell inactive; and

WHEREAS, on April 7, 1918, the Hale O Nā Ali‘i O Hawai‘i was reestablished and has continued to exist since; and

WHEREAS, with the generosity and leadership of Princess Abigail Wahīika‘ahu‘ula, the Hale O Nā Ali‘i O Hawai‘i was formally chartered in 1921; and

WHEREAS, Princess Abigail Wahīika‘ahu‘ula was the sister-n-law of Prince Kūhiō, thus there are strong familial ties between the Hale O Nā Ali`i O Hawai‘i and the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs; and

WHEREAS, among the founding objectives of the ‘Ahahui is its charge to promulgate and cement friendly relations among its members; extending assistance to them in time of sickness and of death; and

WHEREAS, the Hale O Nā Ali‘i O Hawai‘i established extended branched throughout the pae‘āina of Hawai‘i: Honolulu (1918), Hilo (1921), Kaua‘i (1921), Maui (1923), Moloka‘i (1949), Waimea, Hawai‘i (1949), and Kapolei (2000); and

WHEREAS, the Hale O Nā Ali‘i O Hawai‘i is the oldest Hawaiian Organization that preserves and continues to practice, among its rituals, sacred burial rituals connected to the 19th century to include sacred ali‘i burial practices among royalty in the Kingdom of Hawai‘i; and

WHEREAS, past presidents of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs Monsignor Kekumano and Leimomi Khan, current president Annelle Amaral and First Vice President Hailama Farden and numerous officers, committee chairs and members of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs have been initiated as and are members of the Hale O Nā Ali‘i O Hawai‘i; and

WHEREAS, it is known among the Hawaiian Royal Societies that Prince Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole stood on the mound of the statue of King Kamehameha I in 1902 calling for the reestablishment of the Hawaiian Royal Societies and Organizations – the ‘Ahahui Ali‘i; and

WHEREAS, Hale O Nā Ali‘i O Hawai‘i has been a strong voice in the advocacy for proper respect and the protection of Ali‘i legacies and Trusts; as well as for the proper treatment of deceased Native Hawaiians; and

WHEREAS, the Hale O Nā Ali‘i O Hawai‘i is an unbroken link to kūpuna, mores and protocols of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i; and in most recent times has established newer capacity building efforts to carry the ‘Ahahui into its second century; and

WHEREAS, at its first annual convention on September 3, 2018, the Maui Council of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs adopted this same resolution.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs at its 59th Annual Convention in Kalapaki, Kauaʻi, in the malama of Welehu and the rising of ʻOlepau, this 17th day of November 2018, congratulating the Hale O Nā Ali‘i O Hawai‘i, ‘Ahahui Po‘o, Hālau ‘O Wahīika‘ahu‘ula, Helu ‘Ekahi on the 100th anniversary of its reestablishment; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a certified copy of this resolution be transmitted to the Hale O Nā Ali‘i O Hawai‘i, ‘Ahahui Po‘o, Hālau ‘O Wahīika‘ahu‘ula, Helu ‘Ekahi, The ‘Aha Kahuna Nui of the Hale O Nā Ali‘i O Hawai‘i, The ‘Aha Hīpu‘u; and that copies be transmitted as well to the Governor of the State of Hawai‘i, President of the State Senate, Speaker of the State House of Representatives, Chair of the State Senate Committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the State House Committee on Ocean, Marine Resources & Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and all County Mayors.

The undersigned hereby certifies that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted in the malama of Welehu and the rising of ‘Olepau on the 17th day of November 2018, at the 59th Annual Convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in Kalapaki, Kaua‘i.
