ASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUBS

A RESOLUTION

No. 2018 – 1

REMEMBERING BELOVED KUPUNA AND MĀNALEO REV. HANNAH ELEANOR HANAKAULA (PIOHI‘A) MCKEAGUE

WHEREAS, Rev. Hannah McKeague was born on June 7, 1928, in her family home on Loko Drive in Wahiawā, O‘ahu to Kahu Rev. Moses Piohi‘a and Hope Kahu Rev. Nancy Piohi‘a; and

WHEREAS, Rev. Hannah McKeague was raised speaking Hawaiian, and thus she was recognized as one of the last (if not, the last) mānaleo born in Wahiawā, O‘ahu; and

WHEREAS, Rev. McKeague attended Leilehua Intermediate School and St. Francis High School where she remained a boarding student until she graduated from St. Francis; and

WHEREAS, Rev. McKeague, from 1947 to 1949 worked for Hawaiian Pine Co. and from the 1960s to 1989 was a civilian worker for the United States Army, serving as an accounts payable clerk until her retirement; and

WHEREAS, Rev. Hannah McKeague was married to the late Allen McKeague, and the two celebrated five children, seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Rev. Hannah McKeague was ordained as a Kahu Ha‘i ‘Euanelio for the Ke Alaula o ka Mālamalama Church in 1998; and

WHEREAS, Rev. McKeague, being one of the last native speakers of the Hawaiian language was given life membership in the Kuini Pi‘olani Hawaiian Civic Club in 2006 and was also bestowed life membership in the ‘Ahahui ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i (Hawaiian Language Professional Organization); and

WHEREAS, the Kuini Pi‘olani Hawaiian Civic Club, during the year of our Lord 2018, March 29th, suffered with deep sorrow the passing of our beloved member, who was a member since October 2006; and

WHEREAS, at its first annual convention on September 3, 2018, the Maui Council of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs adopted this same resolution.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs at its 59th Annual Convention in Kalapaki, Kauaʻi, in the malama of Welehu and the rising of ʻOlepau, this 17th day of November 2018, remembering beloved kupuna and mānaleo Rev. Hannah Eleanor Hanakaula (Piohi‘a) McKeague; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a certified copy of this resolution be transmitted to the ‘ohana of Rev. Hannah P. McKeague, Ke Alaula O Ka Mālamalama Church, the Kuini Pi‘olani HCC, the ‘Ahahui ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i, as well as the Governor of the State of Hawai‘i, President of the State Senate, Speaker of the State House of Representatives, Chair of the State Senate Committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the State House Committee on Ocean, Marine Resources & Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and all County Mayors.

The undersigned hereby certifies that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted in the malama of Welehu and the rising of ‘Olepau on the 17th day of November 2018, at the 59th Annual Convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in Kalapaki, Kaua‘i.
