ASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUBS

A RESOLUTION

No. 2017 – 16

HONORING GWENDOLYN “AUNTY GWEN” MOKIHANA YUK INN KAMISUGI, ULANA MASTER PRACTITIONER, FOR HER DEDICATION TO THE PRESERVATION OF OUR HAWAIIAN ORAL TRADITIONS OF LAUHALA AND HER DEVOTION TO HER FAMILY AND HER HAUMANA

WHEREAS, Gwendolyn Mokihana Yuk Inn Kamisugi was lovingly known to the Hawaiian Civic Club of Wahiawā and others as Aunty Gwen, Ulana Master Practitioner; and

WHEREAS, Aunty Gwen, was sister to Lecia Ortiz, mother to Miles (Di) Kamisugi and Renee Kamisugi (Sean Mokuau), a grandmother of four, and a great-grandmother of two; and

WHEREAS, Aunty Gwen refined her expertise in the art of lauhala weaving under the study of Ulana Master Gladys Kekuna Grace and became one of her distinguished teachers; and

WHEREAS, Aunty Gwen spent many years instructing haumana on ancestral wisdom, knowledge, and understanding through our Hawaiian oral traditions in lauhala weaving; and

WHEREAS, Aunty Gwen, in her desire to mālama, learned and practiced the skills of gathering, planting, nurturing, and maintaining pūhala – the hala trees; and

WHEREAS, Aunty Gwen’s legacy is conscientiously and affectionately carried on with deepest aloha through her haumana of Nā Lālā O Ka Pūhala; and

WHEREAS, the members of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Wahiawā respect, honor and acknowledge Aunty Gwen Kamisugi as Kupuna O Kūkaniloko, Līhu‘e, O‘ahu a La‘ila‘i.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs at its 58th Annual Convention in Seattle, Washington, in the malama of ʻIkuwā and the rising of Māhealani, this 4th day of November 2017, honoring Gwendolyn “Aunty Gwen” Mokihana Yuk, Ulana Master Practitioner, for her dedication to the preservation of our Hawaiian Oral Traditions of lauhala and her devotion to her family and her haumana; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a certified copy of this resolution be transmitted to Lecia Ortiz, Renee Kamisugi (Sean Mokuau), Miles (Di) Kamisugi, to Aunty Gwen’s haumana through Stacie Segovia of Nā Lālā O Ka Pūhala, the Hawaiian Civic Club of Wahiawā, as well as the Governor of the State of Hawai‘i, President of the State Senate, Speaker of the State House of Representatives, Chair of the State Senate Committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the State House Committee on Ocean, Marine Resources & Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and all County Mayors.

The undersigned hereby certifies that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted in the malama of ʻIkuwā and the rising of Māhealani on the 4th day of November 2017, at the 58th Annual Convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in Seattle, Washington.
