ASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUBS

A RESOLUTION

No. 2018 – 16

COMMENDING HAILAMA FARDEN, ON BEING SELECTED AS ONE OF 2018 THE HONPA HONGWANJI MISSION OF HAWAII LIVING TREASURES OF HAWAIʻI FOR HIS STRONG PERSONAL COMMITMENT TO THE VIBRANCY OF THE HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

WHEREAS, Living Treasures of Hawai‘i™ recognizes and honors individuals who have demonstrated excellence and high achievement in their particular field of endeavor, and who, through continuous growth, learning, and sharing, have made significant contributions toward enriching our islands’ distinctive cultural and artistic heritage; and

WHEREAS, the Living Treasures of Hawai‘i program was created by the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaiʻi in 1976, inspired by the Living National Treasures of Japan; and

WHEREAS, the 2018 Recognition Ceremony and Luncheon was held on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village; and

WHEREAS, Hailama Farden, is most recognized and respected as one of Hawaiʻi’s leading specialist in language and cultural resources; and

WHEREAS, Hailama is often consulted as a name giver, a culturally significant gift that is bestowed upon people in traditional Hawaiian practice; and

WHEREAS, his assistance is sought after for cultural advice and translation, names of community developments, buildings, recording projects, and musical group names; and

WHEREAS, he is also called upon as a wailer for funerals where it is considered an honor to be asked to deliver this type of chant; and

WHEREAS, Hailama has presented this very distinct style of oli for Hawaiʻi royalty, former Presidents and numerous respected Hawaiian elders; and

WHEREAS, He is also called on to be a Hawaiian language, chant and music judge for hula competitions both in Hawai‘i and Japan; and

WHEREAS, in these various roles, including his civic and leadership contributions, Hailama continues a strong personal commitment to the vibrancy of the Hawaiian language and culture.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs at its 59th Annual Convention in Kalapaki, Kauaʻi, in the malama of Welehu and the rising of ʻOlepau, this 17th day of November 2018, commending Hailama Farden, on being selected as one of the Honpa Hongwanji mission of Hawai‘i, 2018 Living Treasures of Hawai‘i for his strong personal commitment to the vibrancy of the Hawaiian language and culture; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a certified copy of this resolution be transmitted to Hailama Farden, the Kamehameha Schools CEO, Mr. Livingston Jack Wong, The Kamehameha School Archives, the Hale O Nā Ali‘i O Hawai‘i and the Daughters and Sons of Hawaiian Warriors – Māmakakaua; and that copies be transmitted as well to the Governor of the State of Hawai‘i, President of the State Senate, Speaker of the State House of Representatives, Chair of the State Senate Committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the State House Committee on Ocean, Marine Resources & Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and all County Mayors.

The undersigned hereby certifies that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted in the malama of Welehu and the rising of ‘Olepau on the 17th day of November 2018, at the 59th Annual Convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in Kalapaki, Kaua‘i.
