A RESOLUTION
No. 2019 -15
CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF WAIMEA HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB MEMBER LILA-ANNE KAUINOHEA KAWAI YIM, ALSO FONDLY KNOWN AS “PUGGIE”
WHEREAS, Lila-Anne Kauinohea Kawai Yim was born at home in Waimea, Hawai‘i Island on October 26, 1931, to Harry and Lehua Kawai and graduated from Hilo High School in 1950; and
WHEREAS, Rowell Arlen Yim and Lila-Anne (Puggie) Kawai were married on June 7, 1952, at the ‘Imiola Congregational Church in Waimea, Island of Hawai‘i; and
WHEREAS, Puggie was a housewife and mother until all of her children were in school; and
WHEREAS, Puggie worked for 31 years at the State Tree Nursery in Waimea were she made life-long friends; and
WHEREAS, Puggie was a life-long member of the ‘Imiola Congregational Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, deaconess, moderator, pianist, organist, choir director, and mentor; and
WHEREAS, Puggie unselfishly shared her son, Harry, with her parents, allowing him to be brought up by them; and
WHEREAS, Puggie lovingly shared her daughter, Mary-Alice, with her uncle and aunt in their old age, when a two week visit became a seven-year hānai; and
WHEREAS, when her parent asked to adopt their grandson, Harry, Puggie said that it was unfair to the girls and if they wanted one child they needed to take them thus lovingly allowing all three of her children to be adopted; and
WHEREAS, through her three children, she had three grandchildren, Koa and Kalā Radl (Edie), and Kawai (Mary-Alice), and through them had five great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, to her great joy and through the wonder of recombined families, she was blessed with additional grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even one great-great-grandchild; and
WHEREAS, Puggie was a life-time member of the Waimea Chapter of the Ka‘ahumanu Society; and
WHEREAS, Puggie was a member of the Waimea Hawaiian Civic Club and offered support, help, and wise and dear counsel; and
WHEREAS, throughout her life, she believed in her eternal Father and God, was a woman who believed in and trusted her Savior, Jesus Christ, and served her church selflessly.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in Convention at its 60th Annual Convention in Lahaina, Maui, in the malama of Welehu and the rising of Lāʻau Pau, this 16th day of November 2019, celebrating the life of Waimea Hawaiian Civic Club member Lila-Anne Kauinohea Kawai Yim, also fondly known as “Puggie;” and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a moment of silence be held in honor of Lila-Anne Kauinohea Kawai Yim; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that certified copies of this resolution be transmitted to the family of Lila-Anne Kauinohea Kawai Yim and the Waimea Hawaiian Civic Club, as well as the Governor of the State of Hawai‘i, President of the State Senate, Speaker of the State House of Representatives, Chair of the State Senate subject matter committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the State House subject matter committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and all County Mayors.
The undersigned hereby certifies that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted in the malama of Welehu and the rising of Lāʻau Pau on the 16th day of November 2019, at the 60th Annual Convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in Lahaina, Maui.
