ASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUBS

A RESOLUTION

NO. 2020 – 7

HONORING THE LIFE OF ETHELYN KANESHIRO KAʻAIHUE

WHEREAS, Ethelyn Kaneshiro was born in Hilo, Hawaiʻi on December 25, 1919, the second of seven siblings; and

WHEREAS, she was affectionately called Aunty “Ethel” by many; and

WHEREAS, Aunty Ethel fell in love with and married Moke Kaʻaihue and then moved to Auld Lane near Palama Settlement on Oʻahu; and

WHEREAS, this regal couple were regular ballroom dancers at the annual Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu Holokū Ball; and

WHEREAS, Aunty Ethel and her beloved husband Moke were a constant presence in Hawaiian Civic Club activities until he passed; and

WHEREAS, she continued to live an active and generous life both inside and outside of the Hawaiian Civic Club movement; and

WHEREAS, Aunty Ethel was an avid swimmer, diver, and hula dancer; and

WHEREAS, she was well known for the Hawaiian woods and fine jewelry offered at her Hauʻoli Manawa Gifts shop in Kapahulu, Oʻahu; and

WHEREAS, Aunty Ethel was also known for her attention to detail such as the care she took in wrapping her packages, having learned the art of Ikebana in Hawaiʻi and Japan to surprise and delight her customers and friends; and

WHEREAS, she was a model of caring and service and enjoyed life as treasured memories; and

WHEREAS, Aunty Ethel celebrated her 100th birthday with ʻohana and friends; and

WHEREAS, she passed in the company of loved ones on April 27, 2020; and

WHEREAS, we recognize and honor Aunty Ethelyn Kaneshiro Kaʻaihue for her more than fifty years of membership to the Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu and service to the Hawaiian Civic Club movement; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs at its 61st Annual Convention in held online, in the malama of Makali‘i and the rising of ʻOlekūkolu, this 22nd day of November 2020, honoring the life of Ethelyn Kaneshiro Kaʻaihue; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a certified copy of this resolution be transmitted to Hilda and Bob Thomas, as well as the Governor of the State of Hawai‘i, President of the State Senate, Speaker of the State House of Representatives, Chair of the State Senate subject matter committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the State House subject matter committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and all County Mayors.

The undersigned herby certifies that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted in the malama of Makaliʻi and the rising of ʻOlekūkolu on the 22nd day of November 2020, at the 61st Annual Convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs held online.
