A RESOLUTION
No. 2019 – 6
REMEMBERING THE LIFE OF JOSEPHINE KEAHIOLALO BIRCH
WHEREAS, Josephine Keahiolalo Birch, affectionately known as Aunty Jo, was born on February 23, 1935, in Hale‘iwa, O‘ahu, to Joseph Kaleimanuia Keahiolalo, Sr., from Honolulu, O‘ahu, and to Thelma Kauahikaua Keahiolalo from Hale‘iwa, O‘ahu, the fourth of six children; and
WHEREAS, she attended Waialua Elementary School, (now known as Hale‘iwa Elementary School), and graduated from Waialua Intermediate and High School in 1953; and
WHEREAS, she attended Honolulu Business College and worked for the Hawaiian Electric Company until her retirement in 1995; and
WHEREAS, she married Sylvester “Baja” Leialoha Birch on July 4, 1956, and made their home in Kailua, O‘ahu: and
WHEREAS, she is survived by her daughter Joleeann “Keahi” Birch; grandson, Jonah Kulanakila Birch; sisters Dolly Keahiolalo Crawford, and Antoinette Kaleilani Mallow; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, in 1994, she became a member of ‘Ahahui Kīwila Hawai‘i O San Diego and attended the Annual Conventions of the Association of Hawaii Civic Clubs as a delegate or alternate; and
WHEREAS, in 2017, Aunty Jo became a member of the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club, and her illness prevented her from attending convention representing the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club; and
WHEREAS, Aunty Jo, gave freely of her time and talent to support the vision of Prince Kūhiō and the Hawaiian Civic Club movement.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs at its 60th Annual Convention in Lahaina, Maui, in the malama of Welehu and the rising of Lāʻau Pau, this 16th day of November 2019, remembering the life of Josephine Keahiolalo Birch; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this delegation take a moment of silence to remember the life of Josephine Keahiolalo Birch; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a certified copy of this resolution be transmitted to Joleean Keahi Birch, ‘Ahahui Kīwila Hawai‘i O San Diego, and Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club, as well as the Governor of the State of Hawai‘i, President of the State Senate, Speaker of the State House of Representatives, Chair of the State Senate subject matter committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the State House subject matter committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and all County Mayors.
The undersigned hereby certifies that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted in the malama of Welehu and the rising of Lāʻau Pau on the 16th day of November 2019, at the 60th Annual Convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in Lahaina, Maui.
